Current Uruguay kits were adopted in 1910 as an homage to now-defunct River Plate F.C., one of the four great clubs of early Uruguayan football; the national team adopted the light blue away jerseys of the club as their home jersey. The red jersey that is used in today's away strip was first used at the 1935 Copa América, held in Santa Beatriz in Peru, which Uruguay won. It was not worn again until 1991, when it was officially adopted as the away jersey.

Uruguay to camp in Kimberley, South Africa

The Uruguayan Football Association has chosen the city of Kimberley, at the centre of South Africa, to establish its training camp during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Yesterday, minutes before starting the journey back to Montevideo, AUF Executive Committee member, Lucas Blasina, announced that they had “found the Uruguayan base in South Africa”.

The AUF delegate said that “Kimberley is the best option for the national team’s stay” for the duration of the World Cup.

Kimberley, capital of the Northern Cape province, lies roughly at 800 kilometres northeast of Cape Town and 500 kilometres southwest of Pretoria and Rustenburg, cities in which Uruguay will face Group A rivals France, South Africa and Mexico, respectively.

The final decision was made by national team coach, Oscar Washington Tabarez, who visited numerous cities and potential lodgings throughout the country before making his choice.

Tabarez highlighted the city’s reputation as one of the safest in South Africa, as well as its relative small size, centric location and ample transportation options, as the main factors for selecting Kimberley.

La Celeste will use the GWK Park Stadium as their training ground during their stay. The venue is home to local rugby club Griquas, and will undergo reformation in the coming months to fit the team’s needs.

The Uruguayan national team will stay at the Protea Hotel, located in the outskirts of the city. In accordance with Tabarez´s plan, the squad will arrive and settle in at the hotel a week before their World Cup debut, then travel the day prior to each match and return after it to their headquarters in Kimberley.
