Performances in the World Cup

Since 1950, the national team has had mixed performances in the World Cup, achieving fourth place in 1954 and 1970, but failing to qualify on several occasions. A new generation headed by Francescoli emerged in the mid-1980s, which qualified for the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, reaching the second round. During the 2000s, the less successful generation of Recoba, Forlán and Montero among others qualified for the 2002 World Cup, but were unable to leave the group stage.

Nevertheless, during the same time period from the 1950s, Uruguay won the Copa America six times, most recently in 1995, when Uruguay also hosted the tournament. Each of the seven occasions when the Copa America has been hosted in Uruguay has resulted in the Uruguayan team winning the tournament.

By May 1, 2009 Uruguayan National Team are ranked by FIFA 16th in the world and 3rd in South America, below Brazil and Argentina only. fa cup final tickets for South Africa 2010 and Champions League final tickets and Inter Milan Vs Bayern Munich Tickets are available now a days.

Uruguay team at World Cup 2010

In this special series we bring you the local knowledge of the world's leading football tournament. With our worldwide team of experts, each one based in the country in question - from Brazil to North Korea - you'll hear first-hand the latest team news, exclusive interviews, and fan opinions of your World Cup opponents.

For Uruguay, the last thirty years has been disappointing compared to the early history of the World Cup.

Uruguay was considered a major force in world football until the 60’s and a very respectable power and feared team until the end of the 80’s.

But the nation's football decadence became evident at the end of the century, and their World Cup absences became a constant.

In the last 40 years, if Uruguay did qualify for World Cup finals, their performances were very disappointing. After the fourth place finish in Mexico '70, La Celeste only qualified for five out of the ten subsequent World Cups, and never reached the quarter finals.

In fact, since 1974, Uruguay only won one match in their last four World Cup appearances, and it was in a dramatic fashion, in 1990 against South Korea, with a Daniel Fonseca last minute goal.

It's impossible to talk about just one major disappointing moment, as there have been many circumstances involving the national team and Uruguayan football as a whole.

Fernando Muslera

Néstor Fernando Muslera Micol (born June 16, 1986 in Montevideo) is a Uruguayan footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Italian Serie A club Lazio. He is also the first choice goalkeeper for the Uruguayan national team.

Muslera started his professional football career with Montevideo Wanderers in 2004, having come through the club's youth system. After impressive performances for Wanderers, giants Nacional opted to take him on loan in 2006.

Despite only playing at Nacional for a short time, Muslera's performances saw him linked with some of Europe's biggest clubs such as Benfica, Juventus, Lazio and Arsenal.

Muslera joined Lazio at the close of the 2007 summer transfer window for €3 million as a replacement for the retired Angelo Peruzzi and after plans to sign Juan Pablo Carrizo were delayed due to the non-EU status of the Argentine. Muslera was signed by the Roman side to become the new first choice goalkeeper ahead of veteran Marco Ballotta.

Muslera made his debut for Lazio in a 3-1 home win against Cagliari on 16 September 2007, and made four more consecutive starts, the last which was a disastrous performance in Lazio's 1-5 home loss to Milan on 7 October, a match in which he was at fault on four of the five goals Lazio conceded.

Stadium

Since 1930, Uruguay have played their home games at the Estadio Centenario in the Uruguayan capital Montevideo. The stadium was built as a celebration of Uruguay centenary of independence, and had a capacity of 100,000 when first opened. The stadium hosted several matches in the 1930 World Cup, including the final, which was watched by a crowd of 93,000. Crowds for Uruguay's home matches vary greatly depending on the importance of the match and the quality of the opposition. World Cup qualifying matches often attract crowds of between 60,000 and 70,000, but friendlies sometimes have attendances significantly below 20,000.
