Uruguay's Worst Moment‎

In this special series we bring you the local knowledge of the world's leading football tournament. With our worldwide team of experts, each one based in the country in question - from Brazil to North Korea - you'll hear first-hand the latest team news, exclusive interviews, and fan opinions of your World Cup opponents.

For Uruguay, the last thirty years has been disappointing compared to the early history of the World Cup.

Uruguay was considered a major force in world football until the 60’s and a very respectable power and feared team until the end of the 80’s.

But the nation's football decadence became evident at the end of the century, and their World Cup absences became a constant.

In the last 40 years, if Uruguay did qualify for World Cup finals, their performances were very disappointing. After the fourth place finish in Mexico '70, La Celeste only qualified for five out of the ten subsequent World Cups, and never reached the quarter finals.

In fact, since 1974, Uruguay only won one match in their last four World Cup appearances, and it was in a dramatic fashion, in 1990 against South Korea, with a Daniel Fonseca last minute goal.

It's impossible to talk about just one major disappointing moment, as there have been many circumstances involving the national team and Uruguayan football as a whole.
